Definitions

Wherever these words or phrases appear in this Certificate they will always have the following meanings:

'Close Business Associate'

Any person, who works at your place of business and who, if you were both away from work at the same time for 5 or more consecutive days, would prevent the effective continuation of that business.

'Family'

Insured person, their husband, wife or partner (as long as such partner has lived together as such for 6 consecutive months or more prior to the purchase of this insurance, unless referred to and accepted otherwise by us in writing) and up to maximum of 5 dependent children under the age of 18 years or 23 years provided they are dependent and in fulltime education.

'Home'

Your usual place of residence in the United Kingdom.

'Loss of limb' means permanent loss by physical separation of a hand at or above the wrist or of a foot at or above the ankle, and includes permanent total and irrecoverable loss of use of a hand, arm or leg.

'Permanent total disablement'

A disability which prevents you from working in any and every job and which lasts 12 consecutive months which, at the end of those 12 months, is in our medical advisor's opinion beyond improvement.

'Certificate validation document'

The document showing the names and other details of all the people insured under this insurance. The certificate validation document proves you have the cover shown in this Certificate.

'Public transport'

Train, bus, coach, air or sea services used to join the booked trip.

'Relative'

Husband, wife, partner (as long as such partner has lived together as such for 6 consecutive months or more prior to the purchase of this insurance, unless referred to and accepted otherwise by us in writing), grandparent, grandchild, parent, parent-in-law, brother in-law, sister in-law, brother, sister, son, daughter, fiancé or fiancée, stepfather, stepmother, step daughter, step son.

'Terrorist Act'

Any actual or threatened use of force or violence directed at or causing damage, injury, harm or disruption, or commission of an act dangerous to human life or property, against any individual, property or government, with the stated or unstated objective of pursuing economic, ethnic, nationalistic, political, racial or religious interests, whether such interests are declared or not. Robberies or other criminal acts, primarily committed for personal gain and acts arising primarily from prior personal relationships between perpetrator(s) and victim(s) shall not be considered Terrorist Acts. A Terrorist Act shall also include any act which is verified or recognized by the (relevant) Government as an act of terrorism.

'Trip'

(the certificate validation document will show which product has been purchased)
In respect of Single Trip Travel Insurance:

  1. This Insurance shall cover trips with a maximum duration of 154 consecutive days.
  2. For all Sections other than Cancellation, cover operates during the Period of Insurance shown in the certificate validation document from the time you leave your home or from the start date shown in the certificate validation document, whichever is the later during the whole time away and until return to your home or at the end date shown in the certificate validation document, whichever is the earlier.
  3. Cancellation cover operates from the date of booking a trip or the Date of Issue of this Certificate as shown in the certificate validation document, whichever is the later, up until commencement of the trip.

In respect of Annual Multi Trip Travel Insurance

  1. This Insurance shall cover: -
    1. Trips with a destination outside the United Kingdom.
    2. Trips with a destination in the United Kingdom must involve at least 2 nights accommodation that have been booked and paid for before commencement of the trip.
    3. Trips not involving any hazardous activities unless declared to and agreed by us.
    4. Trips involving Winter Sports Benefits up to a maximum of 21 days in all during the Period of Insurance shown in the certificate validation document. However, certain activities as stated in General Exclusion 25 remain excluded.
    5. Trips with a maximum duration of 31, or 62, or 92 consecutive days as stated in the certificate validation document.
  2. For all Sections other than Cancellation, cover operatives for trips commencing during the Period of Insurance shown in the certificate validation document from the time you leave your home at the commencement of the trip during the whole time away and until return to your home at the end of the trip or the number of days stated in item v) above or at the end date shown in the certificate validation document, whichever is the earlier.
  3. Cancellation cover operates from the date of booking a trip during the Period of Insurance shown in the certificate validation document until commencement of the trip or expiry of such Period of Insurance whichever is the earlier.
  4. Each trip is deemed to be a separate insurance, each being subject to the Terms, Definitions, Exclusions and Conditions stated herein.

In respect of Long Stay Trip Travel Insurance:

  1. This Insurance shall cover trips with a maximum duration of 365 consecutive days.
  2. For all Sections other than Cancellation, cover operates during the Period of Insurance shown in the certificate validation document from the time you leave your home or from the start date shown in the certificate validation document, whichever is the later during the whole time away and until return to your home or at the end date shown in the certificate validation document, whichever is the earlier.
  3. Cancellation cover operates from the date of booking a trip or the Date of Issue of this Certificate as shown in the certificate validation document, whichever is the later, up until commencement of the trip.

'United Kingdom'

England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.

'Valuables'

Photographic, audio, video and electrical equipment of any kind (including CDs, MDs, DVDs, video and audio tapes), telescopes and binoculars, antiques, jewellery, watches, furs, leather goods, animal skins, silks, precious stones, articles made of or containing gold, silver or platinum.

'War'

Any war, whether declared or not, or any warlike activities, including civil war, invasion, insurrection, revolution, usurpation, use of military force or power by any sovereign nation to achieve economic, geographic, nationalistic, political, racial, religious or other ends.

'Winter sports'

Skiing, land-skiing, mono-skiing, cross-country skiing, heli-skiing, off-piste skiing (only when accompanied by an official guide), snow boarding, ski boarding, sledging, tobogganing or ice skating.

'Winter sports equipment'

Skis, poles, boots and bindings, snow boards or ice skates.

'You', 'your'

Each insured person named on the certificate validation document attached to this document. Each person must have been resident in the United Kingdom for at least six consecutive months and have paid the appropriate premium.
